Layne Beachley

Former professional surfer and sport leader

Early years and competition

Beachley grew up in Manly, Sydney, and began surfing there. The National Portrait Gallery records the start of her professional surfing career in 1989 and her subsequent competition record.

World titles

She won six consecutive women’s world surfing titles from 1998 through 2003 and a seventh in 2006. The seven titles made her one of the most successful competitive surfers of her era.

Roles beyond competition

After her competitive career she took roles in sport governance, including chairing Surfing Australia, and supported charitable and mentoring initiatives. The gallery biography and her published account describe that work.
