Leadership in disability services

A practical route into responsibility for people, quality and results in disability services.

Where to enter

Entry routes include direct support, allied health, scheduling, participant service, quality and finance. Spend time understanding participants’ goals and the boundaries of each worker’s role before applying to manage a service.

A project that shows leadership

With appropriate consent and supervision, review a handover or roster process that affects service continuity. Record the problem, the participant-approved change and who is accountable.

What to measure

Use service continuity, participant feedback, incidents, cancellations and staff workload rather than the number of hours billed alone.

Choose your learning

Read the NDIS Commission practice standards for provider governance. Ask a provider which worker screening and reporting duties apply to the exact position.

Check the boundary

Participant choice and safety cannot be reduced to sales targets; registration and worker screening depend on role and provider.

Source to check

Relevant Australian regulator or sector guidance. Confirm location, role, eligibility and current rules with the provider or employer.
