Leadership in aged care
A practical route into responsibility for people, quality and results in aged care.
Where to enter
Start in care delivery, allied health, rostering, quality assurance or service administration. A clinical qualification is needed for clinical practice, while operational leaders may enter from other functions. Observe a handover and ask which concerns require immediate clinical escalation.
A project that shows leadership
Lead a supervised improvement to shift handovers or appointment follow-up. Agree a resident outcome and baseline with a clinical lead before changing the process.
What to measure
Follow missed visits, complaints, incident escalation and staff overtime together. Faster throughput alone is not evidence of better care.
Choose your learning
Read the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s current provider governance obligations. Compare them with one actual position description before buying a management course.
Check the boundary
Provider obligations and standards have changed; a generic management qualification does not authorise clinical work.
Source to check
Relevant Australian regulator or sector guidance. Confirm location, role, eligibility and current rules with the provider or employer.
