Company directors education
Director education can help you understand governance, but it is not a substitute for judgement, sector knowledge or appointment due diligence.
Understand the credential
The Australian Institute of Company Directors offers the Company Directors Course. According to AICD, participants can choose optional assessments. Successful completion of the assessment leads to the course award; eligible AICD members can use the GAICD post-nominal. Simply attending the course does not mean you can use GAICD.
What to compare
| Consideration | Ask the provider |
|---|---|
| Outcome | Course completion, assessed award or membership grade? |
| Content | Governance, strategy, risk, finance and director duties? |
| Delivery | Dates, format, assessment window and workload? |
| Total cost | Tuition, membership, travel and time away from work? |
Before enrolling, speak with a director in your target sector. Ask whether the program would close a real skills gap and whether your board CV has enough relevant experience to justify applying now.

Put the designation on a CV accurately
AICD states that assessment for its Company Directors Course is optional and that successful assessment leads to the course award. Eligibility to use GAICD also depends on membership conditions. Check current wording with AICD before adding a post-nominal. It is safer to list “completed Company Directors Course” with the year than imply an award you have not earned.
Calculate a sensible return
Record fees, membership, travel and days away from paid work. Identify which part of the curriculum addresses a weakness you have encountered in a real board or executive decision. If you have no governance exposure, a committee role and good mentor might improve your judgement alongside formal study.
What education cannot do
No program can assess a prospective board’s finances for you or guarantee an appointment. The interview and due diligence still need specific examples of judgement, independence and sector contribution. Ask recent graduates what they applied afterwards rather than relying on promotional testimonials.
